First-timers Guide to South by Southwest (Austin, TX)
SXSW can be overwhelming to first-timers. Here are some pointers to get started:
Get Registered
Registering means purchasing a badge.
Make a Plan
Review the SXSW website and also check The Austin Chronicle the week of the event.
Make a Schedule
Having some place to start will make your life easier. You may find different things to do as the day goes on but having a rough guide will make a difference.
Study the Maps
The Austin Convention Center is a very large venue. Closer to the event SXSW will publish detailed maps of the location of all the programming within the Convention Center and surrounding venues, as well as maps of official party, screening, and showcase locations around downtown Austin. You will also find maps on-site in each event’s pocket guide.
What to Pack
Austin is a really casual city. Check the weather because March can be hot or cold.
Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking a lot.
You should also pack a reusable water bottle. The air in the convention center can be quite dry, but you’ll find water stations throughout the building to keep you hydrated.
Driving
If you are planning to drive in the Austin area during SXSW, you may want to consider alternative forms of transportation. Parking downtown will be limited, and street closures may make it difficult to get around.
Check the Getting Around section of the website for information on public transportation. Please note that getting a cab scheduled during SXSW will be difficult!
If you will be renting a car be sure to check the Charters and Rentals page for information and discount codes once they become available. If you will be parking near the Austin Convention Center, there are several lots nearby that charge a fee (usually around $7.00) for each day.
Non-SXSW Events
Just because you didn’t buy a badge does not mean you can’t enjoy SXSW! There will be plenty of free events going on all around Austin.
